What can a PDA do for you?

PDA is short for personal digital assistant; it’s an acronym. It has also been called a palmtop computer in contrast to a laptop computer which rests on your lap or a notebook which you use to take notes on. A PDA is in contrast to them because it helps you do more. It’s your personal digital assistant that helps collect, collate, and communicate your business and personal life. Just like an executive assistant is a secretary, a digital assistant is a PDA. It is a personal information manager that rests in the palm of your hand, fits in your pocket, and can be synched with a larger computer.

The iPhone is a characteristic personal digital assistant that enables you to do everything a personal digital assistant can do all in one device like browsing the web, sending e-mail, and even doing word processing. The PDA has come a long way since John Sculley, then CEO of Apple, introduced the term in 1992 in reference to the Apple Newton. The PDA has since morphed into the smartphone, and most PDAs are smartphones. If a PDA can’t make a phone call, then something is lacking.

Most PDAs have a touchscreen for data entry, memory card for data storage, and a connectivity port to connect to the Internet. Some are solely touchscreen, as in the case of the Apple iPhone, or some may have a screen with soft keys, a directional pad, numeric keypad, and a small thumb keyboard for input.

PDAs have many uses, and they are increasingly being used to supplant the desktop computer, except where in-depth research, work, and user input is required. PDAs can be used for automobile navigation when they work together with a GPS system, and they can display traffic data, on-the-go routing, and mobile radar guns that are out there that may flag your car for a ticket.

They also have medical and scientific uses in keeping track of patient records, access to databases, and recording patients on video for their symptom set and then comparing this data with other technologically-grabbed patient data from across accredited databases. Generally, larger PDAs like the Apple iPad are put to such uses, but PDAs can house apps which have medical information too.

PDAs are also great educational tools giving great information whenever anyone needs it with the simple download of an application dedicated to that information. Oftentimes, the information is highly concentrated and digestible compared to websites which can be littered with advertisements and user communications, not to mention poor navigation, slow load times, and a lack of focus.

PDAS can also be used as personal MP3 players to listen to music, and they can replace the need for advanced stereos, boom boxes, or CD players. Songs can be purchased from an online store so that users don’t have to purchase physical copies of music anymore. It is all tied to their digital device. Digital assistants are constantly getting new applications and can transform the way we do anything that required a separate device beforehand. PDAs act to collate everything we need to do.g
